A bevy of new titles arrives just in time for Opening Day. For youngest fans, My Baseball Book, featuring an oversize view of an official Major League Baseball on the cover, provides game basics in a board-book format. Tabbed pages, fanned along the curve of the baseball, enumerate each position. Photos of such stars as first baseman Mark McGwire and shortstop Derek Jeter plus diagrams of the field bring the diamond to life. My Animal Book, in a similar format, uses tabbed pages labeled "scaly," "spotted," and "wrinkly" to describe the animals pictured on each spread.

Ages 3-4. This short, simple board book introducing baseball to very young children is printed on thick pages, rounded baseball-like on one side. Double-page spreads are devoted to the pitcher, the catcher, and each infield position. The outfielders are all lumped together. Only one page is devoted to the batter, who would probably have benefited from two-page coverage. Plenty of color photographs catch major leaguers in action, diagrams show where each position plays, and brief text describes the skills required for every position. A simple explanation of the rules would have added to the package, but this is still an appealing little book for preschoolers with an awakening interest in the sport. Todd Morning
