In this guide, Gene Steinberg has made the wide expanse of America Online (AOL) easily comprehensible. Aimed at beginners, the book assumes little prior knowledge of the online world or AOL. Still, the guide includes enough information about version 4.0 to make AOL veterans peruse the book for a few days before giving it to a newcomer. The main body of Using America Online contains straightforward information on AOL operation and use. But you'll also want to pay attention to the additional notes, extra tips, and neat pieces of AOL-related trivia in the blue margins.
The chapters in the first section of the book are devoted to an AOL "quick start"--how to get up and running on AOL as fast as possible. It describes how to load the software, sign on for the first time, find AOL's primary areas, find online help, and set up parental controls to limit children's access to the online world. The next section discusses the many ways of communicating online, from chat to e-mail to message boards. The third section provides a guide to the Internet at large using AOL as your connection, while Section 4 shows how to set up your own personal Web page in the AOL members area.
