Grade 7 Up This is the first book for young people to concentrate on one of the seven major divisions of the Sioux. As such, it is a refreshing departure from other books that generalize about ``the Sioux.'' The Yankton tribe was chosen as representative of Sioux groups because the size of their tribe is close to average among tribes of the Sioux federation; their reservation is located geographically near the center of Sioux Country; and their agency and working relationship with the gov ernment is the oldest. While the book focuses on the Yankton, it represents major developments in the history of the entire Sioux federation using spe cific tribal information to support gen eralizations. This is an excellent sam ple from a series describing several lesser-known tribes. Following the se ries format, the text is nicely inter spersed with photographs and maps. A section of color plates beautifully shows off samples of Yankton bead work and star quilts. A ready refer ence summary page is included. Nor mally a writer of scholarly works, Hoover has successfully written in an easy-to-read style for young people. Karen P. Zimmerman, I. D. Weeks Li brary, University of South Dakota, Vermillion
