Grade 10 Up-- This series entry reads like a PhD dissertation, without the apparatus to make the text meaningful. Of the four maps included, only one is of much help in locating geographical references--and it lacks coordinates. The index is good, but the glossary is weak. Trout begins with the statement that,"The thread of Maya history stretches from antiquity to today." Readers can figure out today; but what is "antiquity"? Much of the narrative is peppered with references that will keep students flipping pages for elucidation. It is easier to browse through the many, good quality, superbly informative black-and-white and full-color photographs and illustrations than to work doggedly at a straight read-through. Because the author has included complex sequences about the Mayan calendar, numbering system, and chronology of rulers, it'd be a good idea for anyone interested in this subject to preread The Mystery of the Ancient Maya (McElderry, 1985) by Carolyn Meyer and Charles Gallenkamp. --George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield
