From School Library Journal:
Grade 7-12-- A well-organized and comprehensive presentation that relates in an authoritative manner the background of the fourth largest Indian nation in the United States today. Although about two-thirds of the Ojibwa today live in Canada, this book deals mostly with those who live in what is now Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Their long and intricate history and involvement with the Europeans and later Americans is discussed, along with their role in the fur trade, political conflicts, and alliances. The text is enhanced by black-and-white photographs, maps, and drawings. Recent fishing-rights controversies in Wisconsin are included. A particularly welcome feature is the opening chapter on the tribe's origins. Rather than trotting out the standard Bering Strait crossing-of-the-land-bridge theory, Tanner allows the Ojibwa to present their own accounts of their background. As with other titles in this series, there is an eight-page, full-color center spread on artifacts, here beadwork, which seems out of place for the scope of the book. A good index and brief but very current bibliography make this a sound investment. --Lisa Mitten, University of Pittsburgh, PA
