A biography of the former slave who became an outspoken antislavery and women's rights activist in the United States

Grade 4-7-- Former slave Sojourner Truth eloquently preached the word of God and the rights of all people, especially blacks and women. Despite the fact that she could neither read nor write and her unpolished speeches were delivered with the Dutch accent of her first owners, she inspired audiences throughout the United States. This well-written overview of her life is enhanced by crisp black-and-white photographs and prints. Older readers can go on to the more detailed Sojourner Truth (Chelsea, 1990) by Krass. --Marguerite F. Raybould, Glendale Pub . Lib . , CA
