Grade 4-6?There may be a need for a biography of Anne Frank for children too young to read A Diary of A Young Girl, but this is not the volume. This simplistic account does not bring this extraordinary individual to life. Errors in the text such as defining anti-Semitism as "the hatred of Jewish or Arab people" do not inspire confidence in accuracy. The disjointed narrative has a cut-and-paste quality to it. The name of one of Anne's friends is mentioned in one paragraph with no explanation or background information. The poor layout places the photos that illustrate the text on page 25 on page 31. Students unable to read Anne Frank's diary are better served by Johanna Hurwitz's Anne Frank: Life in Hiding (Morrow, 1993) and Ruud Van der Rol and Rian Verhoeven's Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary (Viking 1993.)?Lisa Von Drasek, Brooklyn Public Library
