The author looks specifically at how African slaves came to be used in North America, the Atlantic slave trade, the middle passage, and what happened when the captives reached their destination, and concludes with the end of the slave trade itself. Both the illustrations and quotes from eyewitness accounts are effective in bringing to life a horrifying period in world and American history.
