Most are contemporary (Paula Gunn Allen, Maria Campbell, Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, Linda Hogan, Wendy Rose, and Leslie Marmon Silko) but a few wrote in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (E. Pauline Johnson, Mourning Dove, Sarah Winnemucca, and Zitkala-Sa). Each chapter presents a brief biographical sketch, excerpts from critical reviews, and a bibliography. The straightforward presentation assumes that students have an understanding of literary criticism; this is not a book for beginners in this type of analysis.
