Grade 5-10-- Single-volume treatments of two massive territories that receive little attention in most books on the region. LeVert discusses the ancient and recent history of the areas, and includes the pending divison of the NWT into two separate jurisdictions. She also describes the history and cultures of northern indigenous peoples, including the Dene, Inuit, and Athapaskans; the impact Europeans have had on their lifestyles; and the important roles these people play in many aspects of life in the territories. Anyone who expects to travel on the Alaska Highway, or anywhere else in the regions, will receive a good introduction to the people, places, and events here. Students will find the information and numerous, clearly labeled, full-color photographs useful for reports. There is a map and an ``at a Glance'' fact chart at the beginning of each book. Most of the titles in the further reading lists are from the 1970s, symptomatic of the dearth of information available--until now. --Lucinda Lockwood, Thomas Haney Secondary School, Maple Ridge, BC
