Grades 3-5--This brief country study has succinct chapters (one or two pages) on subjects such as sports and leisure, culture, climate, festivals, food, industry, government, history, and transportation. Sumo wrestling, haiku, sushi, Mount Fuji, and bullet trains are all mentioned. The page on school states that the word sensei means "first born" but it is defined as "teacher" in the glossary. A recipe for tempura and a ningyo (in kimono dress) doll craft project are included. Told from the point of view of a young girl living in a small city in the prefecture of Nagano, the text seems forced at times. The layout is appealing, with color photographs and icons in the upper corners of the pages to indicate topics. The index is incomplete, omitting bunraku puppetry and individual festivals such as Children's Day. Also, "religion" is included; "Shinto" and "Buddhism" are not. As most of the information can be attained from other sources, this is an additional purchase.
