Reviews

Grade 7-10-An overview of the religion's basic tenets and a look at the beginning of Islam and its spread through much of Asia, North Africa, and parts of Europe. Unlike some surveys, this one keeps its sights firmly on the lands in which Islam has a longstanding presence and history, rather than trying to focus on its practitioners in "the West." While the information on Muhammad, the Koran, the prophets, and the five pillars of Islam is common to other sources, Ries's references to specific suras of the holy book, as they pertain to Islamic history and practice, are unusual and should be much appreciated by students. However, new Muslims wanting to learn more about their faith may not approve of such assertions as, "The text of the 15 Koranic chapters mentioning Jesus is clearly taken from the apocryphal gospels," which undercuts the primacy of Muhammad's revelation. The artwork includes full-color illustrations, reproductions of ancient work, and photographs, and the glossary is extensive. This text is best suited to readers already conversant with religious studies.
