Reviews

Grade 6 Up-Rosen presents profiles of likely victims of sexual abuse and probes factors that result in perpetrators of such crimes. He argues that teens who have been abused should not see themselves as permanent victims and writes, "-the future is within your power to change." The author describes progress in promoting children's rights in the U.S., including legislation on reporting suspected abuse. In the single chapter on healing, he recommends talking about the experience and getting help from psychotherapists and counselors. This title covers major points, but there is far too much sermonizing and pep talk. The full-color photos add little to the text.

Gr. 6-12. Informative, but sometimes unevenly written, these two titles in the Focus on Family Matters series discuss important, disturbing issues. Each chapter begins with a brief scenario of a teen facing the problem, and boxed questions personalize the issues with a "What would you do?" approach. The clear, simple page layout includes color photographs that show teens and adults confronting family trauma and sorrow. Teens will appreciate the immediacy of the passages that speak directly to them, but the authors of both books often talk as if they are discussing teens with another adult, and the fluctuating point of view makes for rough reading. Nevertheless, these well-designed books contain helpful and useful information. Roger Leslie
