Series editor Christine Collins, Ph.D., is a research assistant professor of psychology at Vanderbilt University.
This informative overview of ADHD from the Psychological Disorders series clearly and concisely examines a diagnosis common to millions of children, adolescents, and adults. In an early chapter, Peirce discusses the widespread confusion that persists since the American Psychiatric Association officially changed the designation of the disorder from ADD to ADHD in 1987. He also notes that the disorder has been recognized and given various names by physicians since the mid-1800s. Peirce then goes on to explain different types of ADHD, the neurobiology of the disorder, conditions that mimic ADHD, genetic and environmental causes, medications, and other means of coping with the disorder. A concluding chapter briefly discusses current research. Color photographs, charts, diagrams, and sidebars are effectively used throughout, as are case studies, which help put a human face on the facts and figures. A glossary defines vocabulary words (also boldface in the text); additional appendixes include source notes, suggestions for further reading, and related Web sites. Grades 9-12. --Ed Sullivan
