Series introduction author Chuck D redefined rap music and hip-hop culture as leader and cofounder of legendary rap group Public Enemy. His music addressed weighty issues about race, rage, and inequality with a jolting combination of intelligence and eloquence rarely heard before. A musician, writer, radio host, television personality, college lecturer, and activist, Chuck D is also the creator of Rapstation.com, a multiformat online resource for the global hip-hop community.
Gr. 6-9. Fans of the popular Alex Rider thrillers will want this lively, candid biography in the Who Wrote That? series, but even teens who don't know Horowitz's books will enjoy reading this frank account that describes how his unhappy childhood in a privileged British family and a nightmare boarding-school experience influenced his books. Abrams draws heavily on interviews with Horowitz, who talks freely about taking revenge in his stories, remembering his fantasy that he "wasn't a pudgy 12-year-old . . . but that this was [his] cover and in reality after school [he] would slip out and save the world." Just as compelling are Horowitz's perspectives on what makes good horror and spy fiction. Copyediting errors in the text are annoying, but the attractive book design, the clear documentation, and Horowitz's own forthright voice will keep devotees of his novels and aspiring teen writers interested. Other new books in the series introduce Tamora Pierce, Barbara Park, Ann M. Martin, and Maurice Sendak. Hazel Rochman
