From the Grand Canyon to Anasazi ruins, Hopi Indian reservations to ghost towns, snow-capped mountains to river valleys, Bill Weir guides you to Arizona's best places, as well as some lesser-known ones that only a native would know. Gorgeously illustrated, the guide includes hundreds of exquisite images, as well as several three-dimensional drawings-including ones for Montezuma Castle, Arizona landforms, and the fabled Route 66. A special feature are the guided driving tours, which take you down Oak Creek Canyon, through Petrified Forest National Park, and along the Coronado Trail near the Mexico border, among other routes. The state's depth of history and culture is detailed in an extensive review in the front of the book, while lengthy sidebars-featuring the Apache, the spiritual world of the Hopi, and John Wesley Powell, to name a few-are scattered throughout. Broken into 7 regions, the visit begins with the Grand Canyon and Arizona Strip, and moves on to Northeastern Arizona, North-central Arizona, Western Arizona, South-central Arizona, Eastern Arizona, and, finally, Southern Arizona.

About the Author:
Bill Weir discovered traveling while still in school and has never tried very hard to settle down. A bicycle ride across the United States with Bikecentennial in 1976 inspired the idea of the ultimate ride-a cycle tour around the world. He got started writing guidebooks on that trip in 1979 by sending suggestions to the author of the South Pacific Handbook while island hopping there. That led to paid assignments with the publisher to update parts of the Indonesia Handbook. When Bill returned to Arizona after 4.5 years of travel, he started thinking of places about which to write a guidebook. He realized that the best one lay under his feet, and wrote the Arizona Handbook, which came out in 1986. Utah then beckoned from the north and Bill completed the Utah Handbook a few years later. His bicycle "Bessie" collected dust for a while, but they returned to Asia in 1995 to finish the round-the-world ride via the Middle East and Europe. He lives in Flagstaff, AZ.
Review:
"The pictures are, well, National Geographic quality: panoramic vistas, slice-of-life-situations, interesting wildlife." Arizona Republic

"It’s like reading and looking at a really in-depth National Geographic essay." Seattle Times
