Reviews

Grade 3-5. Several of the success stories of the Endangered Species Act are celebrated in this book illustrated with glorious, full-color photographs. Galan begins with the history of the act, explaining the difference between threatened and endangered and mentioning that originally 109 species were listed. Various animals and plants that have benefited from government protection are featured along with large, crystal-clear photos. The bald eagle, the gray wolf, the snail darter, and the Loch Lomond coyote thistle are among those included. Although the author does not cover in depth the processes used for increasing animal populations and reintroducing certain species into the wild, an overall view of conservation efforts is given. Bruce Babbitt's impassioned foreword brings home the moral and spiritual arguments as opposed to the scientific reasons for saving endangered animals.?Helen Rosenberg, St. Scholastica High School, Chicago, IL
