He created the "wall of sound", produced the Beatles' last record, got the Ramones to go "pop", made the Righteous Brothers respectable, and was a millionaire by the age of 21. He was the star of the records he produced, not the artists. These and Spector's many other musical achievements are well-chronicled in this tightly-written and very accessible book that doesn't shy away from Spector's eccentricities or his violent, reclusive tendencies.
Mark Ribowsky, a frequent contributor to Playboy, is the author of Don't Look Back: Satchel Paige in the Shadows of Baseball. He lives in New York City.
