Contracting for any home construction can be an anxious moment for the homeowner. This book was written specifically to put fears to rest. Each chapter describes in detail the work in a particular area of construction in terms anyone can understand. Aided by more than 100 illustrations, the text explains the home construction basics: beginning construction; excavation, framing, roofing, heating and cooling; plumbing, electrical, finish work, and more. Plus, readers learn how to develop plans and specifications; cost the job; obtain permits, financing, and insurance; manage the bidding process; and schedule work and ensure it is done right.

Shepherd, a general contractor, does not pull any punches in this do-it-yourself guide. Indeed, some readers may change their minds and hire a contractor after reading his book. However, those who persevere will benefit from Shepherd's instruction. He explains the variety of systems that make up a house and shows how to evaluate options and manage subcontractors. Included are appendixes dealing with scheduling, costs, and superinsulating for cold climates. This may be the best general book on the subject available. Anyone building a new home or adding to an existing one will find it valuable. Highly recommended for public libraries.
