Reviews

In the aerial arena of World War II, American Billy Hochreiter and German Rolf Schiller clash briefly as Rolf sends Billy's fighter crashing, forcing Billy to eject. The two don't meet again in combat until later, but their journeys toward God run parallel; both lose the women they love and begin to question their roles in the deadly dance of war. Joens (The Dawn of Mercy) clearly depicts the separation of body and soul as pilots from both sides dehumanize each other in order to kill. Rolf's realization of Germany's decay and his own personal fall resonates, while the superficial attitude of the Americans rings false. For historical fiction collections.

October 14, 1943. 0945 hours. Black Thursday. The skies over Belgium. The duel didnt last but a few seconds. The American pilot had made an error, and there wasnt time to correct it. Disbelief sheeted over his mind the instant before a burst of 20mm rounds tore through his P47 Thunderbolt with a shudder that came up through his teeth. ... Immediately he reached for the cockpit latches and gave them each a quick jerk. But the canopy wouldnt budge. ... Through the smoke he could just make out the vague outline of the Messerschmitt, the predator waiting, it seemed, for its prey to roll over and die. Billy cared nothing about the German now, only of getting out of the plane. ... He took a deep breath and continued working the latches that wouldnt give. The flames were climbing up his legs now and searing his trousers. Why wont anything budge? Come on. Give! Give! GIVE! He felt the heat against his legs and panic came up in a rush.
