Sir Thomas More collected rare treasures and curiosities; so did Sir Hans Sloane, who assembled the basis of the British Museum. Charles II's delectable mistress, Hortense Mazarin, kept a menagerie in her garden, and so did Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Canaletto painted Chelsea from Battersea while Whistler later painted Battersea from Chelsea. Of all London districts, Chelsea is perhaps the most unique. The home of Thomas Carlyle, Ellen Terry, Oscar Wilde, and Henry James, Chelsea has an extraordinary history which is compellingly related in these pages against a changing social and architectural background.
