This stunning volume reveals both the state of the art of modern calligraphy and the pleasing results of fine book making. Examples of contemporary lettering done in the last four years by 124 scribes from 12 countries are presented in a variety of media: with brush, pen, and chisel; using gold, gouache, ink, and watercolor; lettered onto paper, vellum, fabric, glass, and plastic; inscribed into stone, brick, and fine woods. The nearly 300 samples are divided into three sections: calligraphy and lettering, calligraphy and lettering for reproduction, and inscriptional and three-dimensional lettering. It is a pleasure to see such stellar work by accomplished masters of the art, a very welcome change from the plethora of amateur books on the subject. Highly recommended. Ann Copeland, Drew Univ. Lib., Madison, N.J.
