Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians by J. B. Lightfoot, now in its 12th edition, has long been considered among the finest ever written on this epistle. Part of a joint project on the New Testament begun in 1860 by Lightfoot, Hort, and Westcott, this commentary as well as the others was planned to be complete in itself rather than merely a part of a whole.
Lightfoot considered commentary on Philippians to be an easier task than commentary on the other epistles of Paul. Only a few passages, Lightfoot wrote, posed serious difficulties of interpretation. As a result, he felt free to add investigative material on all the epistles of Paul as well as on apostolic Christianity generally. He specifically discusses Paul and Seneca as “an attempt to trace the relations of the Gospel to a second form of religious thought—the most imposing system of heathen philosophy with which the Apostle was brought directly in contact.”
