Falk, having taught in England and Australia, ended his career in this country, at the University of North Carolina. Fourteen papers are collected here, written from the 1940s to the 1970s. Five have not been published before. (These last are undatedan unfortunate omission.) Falk is concerned throughout to examine the bounds of reason, in order to determine whether ethics can be validly grounded. Central here is his essay "Hume on Is and Ought," since, from Hume forward, philosophers have generally agreed that value judgments are sui generis and cannot be entailed by factual statements. Falk favors a softening of this dichotomy which allows for an "intersubjectively valid" ethics. For academic subject collections. Leon H.
