For several years, a distinguished group of social scientists the Committee on Regional Accounts has worked to develop a body of research and data that can produce a system of economic accounts for regions and metropolitan areas. Essentially, such a system would serve purposes similar to those already successfully served by the national economic accounts; however at sub national levels the problems are more complex. The essays and comments presented here result from the Committee's second conference. Each reflects the stimulating and experimental nature of current research concerned with the interdependence between national, regional, and intra-regional economic activities, between public and private factors, between industry and commerce, and between places of work and residence. Taken as a whole, the essays provide a consistent methodology from which information can be organized to facilitate private and public decision making.
