Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. vii+267 pages tables, appendices, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (91/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's grey cloth with black lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. In the literature of the Revolution of 1910, most Mexicans trace its roots to agrarian unrest, hold that reform peaked under Lazaro Cardenas in the late thirties, and conclude that current bosses sabotage yesterday's ideals. Nearly all American scholars talk of an institutionalized revolution in which old commitments thrive under the tutelage of Echeverria and his cohorts. In his lucid Politics of Mexican Development, Hansen breaks with his optimistic colleagues and joins the ranks of Mexicans increasingly unimpressed with the Mexican miracle which, in simplified terms, means that since the mid‐thirties the economy grows at a rate of 6 per cent. That miracle, Hansen demonstrates, favors a bare 30 per cent of the people and embraces one of the most inequitable distributions of income in Latin America. To Hansen, the character of the middle‐class mestizo explains the betrayal. Insecure, plagued by complexes of inferiority, denied equality until 1910, and essentially entrepreneurial and self‐seeking, the mestizo converted the Revolution into his opportunity for personal gain, particularly after 1940. Here, Hansen, whose impressive study rests almost exclusively on secondary sources, reveals a gap in his knowledge. The climb upwards of the entrepreneur colors brightly the history of Mexico both before and after 1940. Condition: Jacket price blackened out, light edge wear else a very good to fine copy in a near fine jacket. Seller Inventory # BOOKS003689
