Presented here are papers by seven of the academics who participated in the 1986 English Institute. The authors address the topic of literary expression, inevitably laden with either sexual or racial politics. Along the way, they consider texts spanning time and culture, moving from Old Testament chauvinism to 20th-century American racism, from critical readings of John Donne to an analysis of Byron's sexuality. Both well written and well edited, this collection would well serve most academic libraries and will be of special interest to both literary and political scholars.
