Cartier's account of his voyages to the St. Lawrence region of northeastern North America in 1534, 1535, and 1541 comprises the first record of European exploration there and contact with the native people. He describes the reactions of the French and the Iroquois to each other, and reveals much about himself and 16th-century France.
