Text: English, Swedish (translation)
This amazing little book won excellent notices when published in Sweden by a little-known poet and novelist. It is the record of Stanley's expedition into the interior of Africa in search of Livingston, told in diary form by one of his hired men, Shaw, an alcoholic ex-sailor. Portrayed as a despotic, arrogant fool with little interest in understanding the continent he is exploring, Stanley stands in stark contrast to the weak-willed Shaw, who loses his mind trying to comprehend their experience. The real protagonist, however, is Africa itself in all its splendor and cruelty, beautifully evoked in lyrical language. The translation is a work of art itself. Highly recommended for Africana and fiction collections.
