During the years of my youth, my personal theology was very simple - God loves me, and if I'm good enough, hopefully it'll get me into heaven. (Being good, of course, was relative to the bell curve of everyone else. Or, at least, it meant that the good stuff I did outweighed the bad stuff.) Then, when my family moved and I began tenth grade, Jay Davis entered my life and challenged my beliefs to their very core. Among other things, Jay told me that my sinful nature separates me from God that I can't be good enough to make it into heaven, and that this is the reason Jesus died in my place. He also told me that I can know God personally and intimately, that Jesus claims to be the only way, and that faith is the key to the whole thing. Being a red-blooded adolescent, I wasn't about to let anyone else tell me what to believe. The last thing I wanted was to believe something that was not true or was merely a crutch. I did the only thing I could - I called Jay a religious fanatic and emphatically told him, "Knock it off!"
