Biologically and behaviorally, nerve-ending living leads to addictions in the name of freedom. Finding a spiritual home on our own, in our seemingly bleak universe, runs into major obstacles. We would like this spiritual home to be eternal and stable but find our activities bound by time and change. Like homing pigeons who lose their way due to cellular interference or climatic changes, we follow new impulses. We turn with hope to dopey solutions, literally to heroin or cocaine, or metaphorically to any stimulant. We finally get addicted to a new slavery in the name of freedom. We even barter away human, appreciable freedom in the pursuit of unlimited freedom normally reserved by religions for their gods. Fix after fix, be it erotica, smoking or shopping we can't live without our temporary fixes.
