The most distinguished astronomer at the turn of the nineteenth century, Sir Percival Lowell, was particularly known for his expertise on the planet of Mars. He theorized that Mars featured water canals and channels. In 1877, an Italian colleague saw lines crisscrossing the planet, which Lowell claimed proved his theory. Lowell was so eminent in his field that no one dared question his conclusion.  NASA scientists now know Mars much better than Lowell ever hoped to know. They have sent sophisticated probes to map the planet like the back of our hands and haven't found a single water canal or channel. Meanwhile ophthalmology has also advanced in the knowledge of the human eye since 1900. Lowell thought he was studying Mars when all he was doing was mapping the blood vessels in his own eyeballs."  We, too, can suffer from the same strange eye disease, a spiritual Lowell's Syndrome, when it comes to identifying and pursuing God's vision for us. We can equate vision with the things nearest to us, demands urgent to us, stresses pressing in on us in personal, family, and work life. We construct grand goals for these three areas and think we are seeing far out there. But without good "eyes" we can't see at all.
