Madcap heiress Jacelyn Trevain's accidental kidnapping of the impecunious Lord Leigh Claibourne leads to their betrothal, but their growing love is threatened by his slave-trading uncle, drunken cousin, a fire, a litter of puppies, and two more kidnappings

Jacelyn (Jacey) Tremaine, a 17-year-old hoyden, is the indulged child of a sickly, widowed father. Lord Tremaine's bosom beau, Squire Bottwick, suggests a London season. After all no gentleman wants to wed a feisty young woman who is a bluestocking to boot. Enter Leigh Merrill, Earl of Claibourne, 32, fair-haired, impoverished. The villain is the hero's Uncle Fenton, a slave-trader. Metzger has provided enough diversions for three or four Regencies. As usual she writes with a dry wit; however, Jacey is a bit too obstreperous and the Earl too much of a high stickler for a rake. There is a bit more sex than in most Regencies. The ending goes on forever, but this is much better than what usually passes for Regencies today. Recommended.Paula M. Zieselman, Sarah Lawrence Coll. Lib., Bronxville, N.Y.
