The target audience for this well-intentioned labor of love is the modern undergraduate student. The author, whose college days were pre-MTV, might have benefited from pretesting this guide with a sample population from the MTV age. Librarians who work with undergraudates are all too familiar with their resistance to reading computer screens or one-page instructional guides. Will they line up to pay $50 for a 400-plus-page "guide"? Not! The promotional material notwithstanding (only advance proofs were available for review), the simplistic, repetitious text fails to fulfill the publisher's claims of explaining how to use CD-ROM and online databases. A small but glaring contextual error labels all cross-reference abbreviations in Library of Congress Subject Headings as "scope notes." In the appendix, "Directory of Call Numbers Useful to College Students," the entries for " canvassing, direct mail, fife, and illumination of manuscripts and books" only add to this reviewer's suspicions that the author has had little real-world interaction with undergraduates in pursuit of information in an academic reference setting. Not recommended for instructional librarians in search of a new textbook.
