Jeremy Ransom isn't your usual police detective: Given to reading Dickens while bathing, to consulting with his adopted grandmother, Emily Charters, when he's puzzled, and known for his "attitude," Ransom is one of a kind. Unless, of course, you can picture Sherlock Holmes taking a day job with the Chicago police department.
So, when he's visited by Angela Stephens, who tells him she's going to be murdered and hints that her husband will be the killer, Ransom looks askance. When she goes on to say that the murder is in the cards - after all, her fortune teller had just laid them out and read about it in the pattern - Ransom is prepared to dismiss the entire episode.
But there's no avoiding Angela's corpse the next day, and while he discounts the prophesy, he can't discount the fact that Angela's husband is not just the prime suspect, he's the only one.
Nor can he ignore the fortune teller's corpse.
Embittered and filled with uncomfortable doubts about his own perceptions (and the little lines appearing around his eyes), Jeremy Ransom begins putting the pieces together (helped by the insights and Shakespearian quotes served with tea by Emily). He is too late to stop the bloodshed, but right on time to be an avenging angel.

The second Jeremy Ransom/Emily Charters mystery (after Presence of Mind) opens with a stunning blonde entering Chicago detective Ransom's office, "framed in the doorway looking as if she had just stepped out of a novel by Dashiell Hammett." Comparisons to Hammett end there, however, in this carefully arranged but unremarkable puzzler. The woman tells Ransom that her murder has been foretold by a psychic, and she fingers her husband as the most likely killer. Several days later, when she's murdered, it seems like an open-and-shut case-except for the complications. The obvious solution doesn't feel right to Ransom, who becomes obsessed with finding the killer even after the case is closed. There are some nice red herrings here, and the sultry Chicago summer setting is skillfully evoked. But too many of the situations remain lifeless-including the scenes between the detective and Emily Charters, "his personal Miss Marple" and "ersatz grandparent." Generally, Hunter gets the most out of his small cast, but, despite the Chicago summer heat lamented by one and all, this remains a fairly tepid whodunit.

Jeremy Ransom is a Chicago homicide detective who fancies himself a modern-day Holmes. His unofficial Watson is Emily Charters, whom he met in the first series entry, Presence of Mind. Emily gently prods Ransom here and there for the information she needs to solve the case, or at least put it in a context Ransom can live with. In this venture, Angela Stephens, a wealthy Gold Coast resident, approaches Ransom and coolly tells him that her death was foretold by a tarot card reader and that she believes the reader. Ransom, ever the intellectual, doesn't accept her tale, but neither does he reject it. When she's found strangled the next day by her estranged husband, Ransom has a real puzzle to solve. The husband is the obvious suspect, but Ransom isn't obvious. As he plunges deeply into the backgrounds of the principals, he unearths enough greed and family revenge to keep Emily quoting Hamlet throughout. Although set in modern Chicago, the Ransom/Charters novels have a very British ambience. It's an odd mix of milieus, but it works very well. Wes Lukowsky

Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 12") bound in original publisher's red boards with silver lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. The street signs outside Detective Jeremy Ransom's office say it's Chicago, but inside -- and inside his mind and heart and speech -- it's rural England circa 1930. Ransom's second case turns on a riddle with all the earmarks of a British cozy: How did Melina, the tarot reader Angela Stephens consulted on the last clay of her life, know Angela was about to be murdered? It's no good asking Melina: Before she has time for more than a brisk sniff or two, she's followed her late client into the spirit realm. And Ransom and his surrogate grandmother, Emily Charters, whose life he saved in their debut (Presence of Mind, 1994), are left with two deeply unpromising suspects: the transparently grief-stricken widower, Frank Stephens, and Angela's bad-girl sister, Eva Brinkley, who didn't inherit a thing and boasts a shockproof alibi anyway. Emily's not much help this time, and Ransom's improbable charm -- he must be the politest cop in Chicago annals -- grows a little pale. The plot is a perfectly good short-story idea stretched as thin as that last smidgen of marmalade. Condition: Remainder stamp at front end paper else a near fine copy in a fine jacket.
