Grade 6-9 From the Civil War to Vietnam, valiant young women, not always appreciated or compensated for their efforts, struggled for the opportunity to care for the injured and dying. Cosner tells the stories of Clara Barton and Florence Nightingale, famous nurses familiar to generations of girls, and about nurses not so well known but equally as heroic as she explains how medical care and nursing developed in the United States military. A subject that might rate a paragraph or two in history books is adequately recorded in a direct, concise style, interspersing vignettes and social history with the historical events. Informative, interesting black-and-white photographs show the many aspects of nursing, from leisure time during the Spanish American War to attending a Vietnamese casualty. Some of these photographs lack contrast, but the overall quality is good. The index is excellent. The book supplies enough information for reports, and it will attract children who enjoy well-written nonfiction. While most books about the medical field for children are perfunctory, this one has emotion and feeling. It is superior nonfiction, covering material not easily found elsewhere.
