Grade 6-9-- Beginning with a treatment of forensic science and its application to crime detection today, Gardner defines it and explains how it is used. He fills the book with examples of crimes solved by the use of forensics, ranging from the first known case of King Heiron's gold crown, which Archimedes proved was only partially gold, to more current and famous cases such as the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh's infant son and the investigation of the skeleton of Josef Mengele. Detailed descriptions of specific crime-solving techniques are included. Each chapter contains activities for readers that involve using the techniques described, as well as science experiments that employ the principles of crime solving. The book offers fascinating reading based on solid facts. Stylized black-and-white illustrations are sprinkled throughout the narrative; along with the helpful diagrams, they help to clarify and extend the text. The activities are intriguing and informative. Unfortunately, the index is incomplete. An entertaining title for junior detectives, recreational readers, and science-fair enthusiasts. --Sylvia V.
