"The sinuous bodies of snakes are highlighted in vivid paintings that dominate every page of this introductory title .... The book is clearly written and well organized .... The paintings are realistically rendered .... Young herpetologists should find [it] very satisfying."-- School Library Journal
"Striking graphics and a spare, readable text will have young readers snatching up this snake book by this prolific and talented science writer. Without any wasted words, she describes how ... snakes hunt, hide, eat, reproduce, and move."-- Kirkus Reviews
From the time she was very young, she loved animals and nature. She received a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences form Stanford University (1962) and a M.A. (1965) and Ph.D. (1968) in Zoology from the University of California, Berkeley. While in graduate school, Dorothy married fellow student Greg Patent. For the first few years after graduate school she worked as a scientist-two years of post-doctoral work (Sinai Hospital, Detroit, MI and Stazzione Zoologica, Naples, Italy) and later several years teaching part-time night school at the University of Montana and full-time on the faculty for six months. Meanwhile, she began writing for children and has had more than 100 books published by over a dozen publishers.
Dorothy now makes her home in Missoula, Montana. Her house sits on a half acre of land on the flanks of the Blue Mountain-a perfect place for a person who loves nature. There with her husband Greg, they have raised their two sons, David and Jason.
