Come play an amazing guessing game that will show you how to see the world in a whole new way. Every person, animal, and thing around you is made up of many small parts. When you look at each piece separately, fascinating details come into sharp focus. Colors, shapes, and sizes will help you discover an object's true identity. Put the PARTS together like a puzzle and you can see the WHOLE object in a completely new light.
This playful photo-essay takes you on an eye-dazzling journey of discovery.

Shelley Rotner is a highly respected author of concept books for young children. She has written and photographed numerous books, including Changes, which was a "Reading Rainbow" review book. This is her first book for Walker & Company. Shelley lives in Northampton, Massachusetts.
PreSchool-K-A guess-the-whole-from-the-parts concept book. Using bright photographs and simple rhymes as clues, the parts of a familiar item are shown on one spread with a photo of the object in its entirety revealed when the page is turned. Sharp, colorful close-up pictures fill the pages, while a snappy text offers hints about the answer. For example, tightly cropped shots of wheels, seats, lights, and doors followed by "Red lights flash/when it stops for us/Climb on board the big/ SCHOOL BUS." There are also shots of paws, tongue, nose, and tail that evolve into "His fur is soft,/his nose is wet/A loyal/DOG/is one great pet." This will have appeal for the nursery-school set; it is not as sophisticated or clever as Tana Hoban's Look Book (Greenwillow, 1997), which uses peek holes to develop a similar idea. For libraries with a demand for concept books, this one adequately fills the bill.
