This book is an attempt to deal with the basic issues that surround the euthanasia debate. The subject is important, controversial, and complex, calling for sensitivity to the realities of death and dying, a clear understanding of one's Christian faith and its implications for this significant dimension of human existence, conceptual and analytical skills to deftly make the requisite distinctions along the way, and logical rigor to enable one to draw the appropriate conclusions.
Beginning with an unargued for and frankly Christian perspective that life is a gift from God, Wennberg argues that suicide and euthanasia are generally immoral. The author may shock nonbelievers when he claims that justified suicide is rarer than justified homicide, but Wennberg does use many secular arguments to recognize exceptions to both prohibitions. Moreover, he deals sensitively with the conceptual issues that are dear to the hearts of analytic philosophers. He contributes valuably to understanding various kinds of euthanasia. His simple and elegant prose makes this book a delight to read despite its somber themes. Worthwhile for any library.
