These portraits are powerful and highly personal because they tell the stories. both collective and personal, of each group, revealing agreement and dissension, closeness and alienation, growth and stagnation. The result is an intimate inside look at the dynamics of small groups.

Robert Wuthnow is Professor of Sociology, Princeton University. He is the author of many works, including "The Crisis in the Churches: Spiritual Malaise, Fiscal Woe" (1997), "Poor Richard's Principle: Recovering the American Dream through the Moral Dimension of Work, Business, and Money" (1996), and "Meaning and Moral Order: Explorations in Cultural Analysis" (California, 1987).
In many contemporary churches, the advent of the small faith group has been a phenomenon for the last quarter century. Here, at last, is a series of essays documenting the effects of the small group within the larger denomination. The essays cover everything from Bible studies to single charismatics to campus ministries in a variety of denominational settings. An appendix details the national profile of small groups in churches and acknowledges that those in small groups feel cared for, supported, and encouraged in their faith. Inasmuch as Wuthnow states that this is part of a nationwide trend, those interested in the makeup of American society as well as those who want to document what may be happening in their individual churches are encouraged to read this book.
