Reviews

May thoughtfully examines the physician-patient relationship and the role religion should play in it. Steering a middle course, he believes passive euthanasia is permissible, active euthanasia may occasionally be so, but Kevorkian-style physician-assisted suicide never is. Healing, or making whole, May declares, involves a balance between fighting death and relieving pain and suffering. He carefully draws distinctions between contract (legal) and covenant (moral) and between the laborer and the professional. The professional has institutional as well as individual responsibilities; thus, it is up to the physician to see that the hospital or other health care institution with which he is associated meets the medical covenant as well. Furthermore, May maintains, reform of health care is a vital part of the medical covenant; health care and insurance should be available to all, not just the wealthy. He leans toward the Canadian (single payer) system and points out some dangers in HMOs and other piecemeal reforms. William Beatty
