From Booklist:
Gr. 4-6. The year is 1941, and big changes are in store for 11-year-old Maggie Calhoun. Her mom is going to have a baby, and the family will be moving from Chicago to California. In the meantime, Maggie and her younger brother, Cooper, are spending the summer with their aunt and uncle in the tiny town of Oquawka. It isn't long before Maggie begins to wonder if something is wrong with her: she's plagued by memories she can't put into focus; adult conversations suddenly terminate when she enters the room; and an eccentric neighbor insists that Maggie's name isn't Maggie Calhoun. Before the summer is over, Maggie learns the surprising truth about herself in this sweetly nostalgic family story. Though the pace is a bit slow for contemporary readers and the period details will mean more to adults than the intended audience, the characters are engaging and the small-town setting is authentic and appealing. From School Library Journal:
Gr 4-6-A slight and unengaging story about Maggie, 11, who moves in with her aunt and uncle while her pregnant mom and dad prepare to move from Chicago to California. It is 1942; war is imminent. It's soon apparent that something's amiss in the family, and Maggie is not being told what. The small subplots involve an odd girl in the neighborhood and the marriage of another aunt. In the end, Maggie learns that her "aunt" is really her mother. The characters and setting are not memorable enough to grab most readers, and the dialogue is often unnatural and stiff.
