Synopsis
The American Society for Testing and Materials published the first test standard for plastics in 1937. These 21 papers presented at an ASTM symposium held in November 1998, while demonstrating how sophisticated test standards have become, also address their limitations. Papers are organized by the major session headings of: general/design, mechanical, impact/fracture, and chemical/ rheological. The first section covers issues facing engineers in the selection of the optimum material candidate and the development of test data for specific performance criteria.
