Reviews

In these captivating essays (most have appeared previously in Sports Illustrated and Audubon, Gilbert (In God's Countries examines the connection between social and natural history, and includes personal adventures as well. The author follows part of Sir John Franklin's Arctic route, canoes on the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, snowshoes and camps in Pennsylvania's coldest county, and searches for freshwater springs in Manhattan. He writes about Sir William Drummond Stewart, the prototypical outdoorsman, Thomas Nuttall, the nature historian, a colony of monk parrots in Chicago, rattlesnakes and grizzly bears. Gilbert is priceless on the subject of foraging: his expertise encompasses the gathering of papaws and the organizing of home-style maple surgarings. This is undiluted pleasure for nature-lovers.

Our Nature is a highly readable collection of pieces previously published in Sports Illustrated , Audubon , and American West. The subjects range widely, from biography to ecological policy, to man's clash with the elements. Gilbert profiles "God's Registrar" Linnaeus; Thomas Nuttall, the English naturalist whose fame rivaled Audubon's; and William Drummond Stewart, an eccentric Scottish adventurer in America's Wild West. Gilbert's droll turn of phrase adds a light touch to serious subjects, as in his paean to the simple joys of appreciating wildlife, "Nature Loving," and nicely suits such unusual topics as a flock of South American Monk Parrots communally nesting in a Chicago park, or natural springs rising from Manhattan's aquifer. Nature lovers will enjoy. Laurie Tynan, Huntingdon Cty. Lib., Pa.
