This is a fine general description of the war involving Chile, Peru, and Bolivia in 1879-84, and a good analysis of its social and economic consequences. It is well written and fluid, handling complicated economic and social issues in terms the layperson can understand. Tables are well integrated with the text. The author challenges the idea that Chile was the nasty, strong-armed, well-prepared bully in the war. He also demonstrates that the benefits of Chile's seizure of the nitrate deposits were short-lived. The negative consequence of skewing the economic development of the country was by far more significant and longer lasting. The book makes excellent undergraduate reading; it is well documented, touching all major source bases, and is also a good choice for specialists. Nicholas P. Cushner, History Dept., Empire State Coll., SUNY, Buffalo
