Marie Lee is a native of New Jersey. With B.S. and M.A. degrees in science, her early careers were in that field, first as a bacteriologist, later as a science teacher in high school and in college. Upon moving to Cape Cod, she taught briefly at a local college but resigned in order to pursue a career in writing. The Fatal Cape Cod Funeral is the second novel in her Cape Cod mystery series, which began with The Curious Cape Cod Skull. She is a member of the Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime. Marie lives with her husband on Cape Cod, where they are frequently visited by their two children. A committed environmentalist and naturalist, Marie can frequently be found in her garden coaxing plants from the sandy Cape Cod soil -- organically of course.
When Marguerite Smith visited the local Indian Cemetery, she didn't expect to find a funeral already in progress. And the mourners didn't expect to find a second dead body already lying in the freshly dug grave. The unexpected corpse turns out to be Ethan Quade, a member of the local Mashpee Wampanoag tribe who had gone to the big city and made good. But Ethan had also made some enemies along the way. His wealthy father-in-law holds him responsible for the tragic accidental death of Joy, Ethan's beautiful but self-destructive wife. Ethan's old girlfriend, Anna Pochet, still carries a grudge, as does Louis Perry, Anna's unstable former husband. Even one of the investigating officers, Detective Sergeant Lloyd Odoms, has a personal interest in the case -- years ago, he and the dead man were both in love with Anna. Fans of Marie Lee's first Cape Cod mystery, The Curious Cape Cod Skull, will be thrilled with the further detecting exploits of retired science teacher and amateur sleuth extraordinaire Marguerite Smith.
