After Sheriff Dan Ellis keeps Josh Carson and Tiny Hamilton out of the tar and feathering pot, he gives the two drifters a choice of thirty days in jail or bull-whacking for Frenchy Buckalew and her freight line. After only a few days on the line, the two cowpokes figure thirty days or the tar pot would have been a better choice.

But before the two light-hearted drifters can whistle one verse of "Git Along Little Doggie," they find themselves crawling out on a mighty thin limb to help a spoiled young filly fresh from the East and her two orphaned younger brothers who are the targets of a wealthy merchant and his hired band of Comancheros. These men are determined to drive the woman and her brothers from their ranch in the Palo Duro Canyons in pursuit of a thousand gold double eagles hidden on the land. The hostility escalates to violence and leads to a final shootout which could cost Josh and Tiny their lives.

About the Author:
Kent Conwell grew up in the wide-open Texas Panhandle in the town of Wheeler, population 848. His love for the West came naturally, for his grandfather had run away from his Tennessee home when he was 14, bull-whacking his way to the Panhandle where he met his future wife who had traveled from Illinois to Texas.

After moving to Fort Worth, Kent was more at home at the stockyards than school. Somehow, he managed to earn a B.S. and began teaching. Later, he moved to Port Neches, where he acquired a M.Ed. and Ph.D. A successful educator, his love for writing about the West, a period in history unique to America, has never waned. He has won awards for short stories, screenplays, mysteries, and westerns.

Atascocita Gold is Kent's thirtieth western. Promise to a Dead Man, Bowie's Silver, Gunfight at Frio Canyon, An Eye for an Eye, A Hanging in Hidetown, Friday's Station, Sidetrip to Sand Springs, The Alamo Trail, Blood Brothers, Glitter of Gold, Jim Wells, Painted Comanche Tree, Texas Orphan Train, Valley of Gold, A Wagon Train for Brides, Ghost of Blue Bone Mesa, Gold of Black Mountain, Bumpo, Bill and the Girls, Gambling Man, Shootout on the Frio, Angelina Showdown, Palo Duro Shootout, and Junction Flats Drifter are also available.

He has also written seven mysteries: Extracurricular Murder, Galveston, Skeletons of the Atchafalaya, The Riddle of Mystery Inn, Death in the Distillery, Vicksburg, and The Ying On Triad are also available.

From Publishers Weekly:
Cowboy drifters Josh Carson and Tiny Hamilton shoot up nearly everything in sight in this wild hayburner from prolific western writer Conwell. These two saddle bums wander into the town of Atascocita where they immediately get into trouble with local gunsels over a poker game. Saved from tar and feathers by the sheriff and an old couple who run a wagon freight outfit, Josh and Tiny find themselves in the middle of a range war with murderous tycoon Cullen Leach. On a freight hauling job, Josh and Tiny befriend a pretty young woman, Marylee Gaston, heir to a large ranch and guardian of two younger brothers after her older brothers are murdered by Leach's men. Rumors of hidden gold on the Gaston Ranch has every owlhoot in the territory sniffing around, willing to kill for it. As Josh and Tiny try to protect the old couple and the Gaston Ranch, ambushes and gun battles whittle down both sides, with well-ventilated corpses sprawled all over the prairie. When the last fusillade of bullets finally slams home only one cowboy is left standing (barely) with the girl and the gold. This is a smart, meaty story with likeable characters, funny gags and some nifty surprises.
