All of the elements that made the first adventure (Jed's Junior Space Patrol Dial, 1982 ) deservedly popular with beginners are here: a genuinely exciting story, intriguing science fiction hardware, futuristic characters with whom kids can still identify, and illustrations that create an exotic other world. Although a different artist is drawing here, and Jed's spaceship and Commander May look quite different, there is a continuity of style in the stippled ink drawings. The feel here is more warm and immediate, the pages creatively designed to integrate text and art. Juicy stories for beginners are possible, as Jed's crowd proves once again. The addition of a girl characterespecially one who grows from helpless teary victim into clever, plucky risk-takeronly adds to this troupe's attraction.

Another sprightly installment in Dial's easy-to-read series. Like the authors' popular Jed's Junior Space Patrol, this story transports readers to Spaceship Ace. Jed, his parents, two cogs (animals that are a mixture of cat and dog), and a teddy bear robot, are out patrolling when they spy a strange spaceship on the radar screen. They enter the ship and find a small girl. Space bandits had kidnapped her parents, but Molly (who has the ability to become invisible after first turning into a pink cloud) managed to evade capture. Jed et al. set about to rescue Molly's parents and bring the bandits to justice. A fast-moving and exciting book for beginning readers; Sis's full-color pictures are humorous and add zest to this lively tale. Ages 48.
