PreSchool-K Marzollo uses the concept of rebuses to turn nursery rhymes and simple songs into puzzles. Rubber stamp images and colored pencil drawings successfully create an old-fashioned feeling, but the pictures used to symbolize the words are often beyond the realm of a preschooler child's experience. Even with parental assistance, some of the symbols are undecipherable or more obtuse than is appropriate for pre-readers. Clever in concept, the book quickly becomes trite, so most libraries can skip this one. Better executed are Bunny Rabbit Rebus (Crowell, 1983) by David A. Adler or Irene Coletta's From A to Z (Prentice-Hall, 1979; o.p.). Jeanette Larson, Mesquite Public Library, Tex.

Here, 41 favorite nursery rhymes and songs have been set in large type on uncluttered pages and turned into rebuses. The unique rebus illustrations are rubber-stamp images and Carson's colored pencil drawings. The stamp art is derived from 19th century engravings and 20th century line drawingsan inspired idea for illustrating this type of book. Unfortunately, many of the visual clues are ambiguous. The pictures for "night" and "sky" are two similar patches of blue, except when the latter is two clouds or an orange sun in a colored sky. A nice concept, but more clarity would have helped.
